Buttermilk Pie – Just like Nanny used to make

Buttermilk Pie

My Nanny, Wanda Whiteley, was an amazing cook. She was an amazing woman. Born just after the Great Depression into a poor family with several siblings, her life as a child was not easy. Because she struggled with severe asthma and was not healthy enough to walk miles to school every day she stayed home and taught herself to read and write. She was loving, supportive, funny and wonderful. I miss her very much.

A few years before she died she took the time to write out several of her favorite recipes by hand into a small spiral notebook. She gave this to me for a Christmas present and I treasure it to this very day. She had terrible arthritis and it hurt her dearly to painstakingly write out each recipe. This Buttermilk Pie recipe was included and it remains a family favorite.

Nothing would have pleased my Nanny more than to know that her recipes were shared and loved. I’m so proud to post this here on our site and share it with y’all.

I actually feel like a mad genius for figuring these out. My all-time favorite cake is German Chocolate Cake. It’s my choice for birthday cake – or any other day of the year for that matter. It’s the frosting that makes it for me: creamy caramel, coconut, chopped pecans… oh my!

I make a lot of muffins. We take breakfast items to share with our Sunday School groups at our church. Muffins are a quick and easy item to whip up for a crowd. Cake mix makes it all the more easy to bake up something yummy to share. Whenever cake mixes are on sale at our local grocery store, I like to buy at least 10 boxes to use for cookies, muffins, and banana bread.

Cake Mix Muffins: Apple Cinnamon

I love using cake mix for baking. It’s an easy time-saver to have all the flour, sugar and leavening agents in one box. When cake mixes are on sale, I snatch up a bunch to use for cookies, banana bread, and muffins.

Recently I discovered Hershey’s Cinnamon Chips thanks to a friend on Instagram. If she wasn’t a total stranger who lived far away, I would hug her. These things are amazing.

It’s a cold, grey day outside. Today we’re tackling our gigantic pile of laundry. Days like today call for cookies. I have my hands full with the twins nursing through a growth spurt, so I’ve turned cookie duty over to my 12-year-old. She loves to bake. We use cake mix to make cookies quickly and with less mess.

My Nanny’s Hot Rolls

My Nanny (that’s Texan for grandmother) always made the most wonderful hot rolls. I bless the day she shared her recipe with me and took the time to teach me how to make them. My family has praised her name ever since. These are, without a doubt, the best rolls you’ll ever make. They’re an easy crowd-pleaser.
